Spring 2017 Preview

Posted on March 08, 2017 by Justin Rhodes

Yikes...a new season is upon us, it never ceases to come around before you know what has happened.
Still, new arrivals get us all excited and the satisfaction of seeing all of those sketches and doodles come to life never ceases.
We're busy working on putting all the new styles online but wanted to showcase a few new themes that form the core of this new collection...
Mock Hornback Croc - This texture of leather appeared in our very first collection back in 2004...and we then quietly phased it out a few years ago. This season it felt like the time was right to bring it back - we love the extreme definition of the texture and the deep tonal veins and think it can be a really defining piece for any outfit. Comes in Chalk, Midnight and Turquoise (photo below)
Nubuck...It's been a couple of years since we first reintroduced Nubuck and this season we expand further with this wonderfully versatile leather. It lends itself so well to neutral toned clothing and is timelessly classy. We have expanded our neutral colour palette to include Chalk, Pebble, Mole, Mid Tan, Black...and for a bit of seasonal fun added Turq!
Ultra Smooth Vegetable Tan...This leather is one we have been quietly trialling for a year or so and this season it arrives properly in elegant classic tones of Cognac, Bitter Choc, Honey and Black. The leather has all the wonderful pull up properties of vegetable tanned leather but is ultra smooth and buttery soft for those occasions when you need a discreet but hard wearing belt that is sleek but interesting too.
Performance Belts...Many of you have seen over the last year our first foray into what we term Performance Belts. This season we continue with new materials that showcase two tone weave effects, the perfect companion to casual sportswear, acitvewear or to match up with trainers.
Pony Hair...We have been in love with Pony Hair (hair on cowhide) for years...and finally we can see that it is really gaining traction as an alternative to normal leather. This season we are unveiling some experimental burn out styles in Blue and Khaki, essentially an acid wash effect. Really cool and funky...

Belts as Art...The Second Instalment

Posted on March 08, 2017 by Justin Rhodes

Many of you will remember that a year or so back we met very talented photographer Josh Caudwell...and challenged him to come up with some original imagery that would really bring our belts to life and show them in a whole new light.
Our intention was to make this an ongoing project - to keep on experimenting and trying new things in an effort to make people see belts with new eyes..
So we are proud to unveil our next batch of 6 photographs...we hope you like them!

A shot to put our Performance Belts in their correct context

Great Denim deserves a Great Belt

Posted on November 26, 2016 by Justin Rhodes

What is it about Denim?

The comfort, the fit, the durability or just the fact that it’s the most wonderful blank canvas for so many occasions?

Somehow in a world where we have more choice than we know what to do with we remain forever united in our love for one single ubiquitous trouser product, denim.

Of course denim is not just denim, with all its washes, weaves and weights it has morphed away from its workwear origins to become a highly diversified and specialist art form. No other trouser material gets close to its dominance and as our love affair evolves so denim has become as collectible as art and as obsessively purchased as fine wine.

But…as distinctive as denim may be it is ultimately still denim, a little lighter, a little darker, a little finer but hard for all but the true connoisseur to really differentiate.

Are those Jacob Cohen or J Brand, Edwin or Evisu?

Somewhere along the way it seems to have been forgotten that the blank canvas of denim only really becomes art when paired with its loyal sidekick, the belt.

So next time you slip on your current favourites, or are about to invest a hefty chunk in a new pair, think about what will truly set them apart and bring them to life.

Remember….Bogie needed Bacall, Bonnie needed Clyde, Laurel needed Hardy, Clueso needed Cato…

Your Denim needs Elliot Rhodes!

Why a glove collection?

Ladies Gloves from Elliot Rhodes

Elliot Rhodes has always been about challenging preconceived ideas. It is what lead us to turn the Belt market on its head, driven by our belief that unless you challenge the status quo nothing evolves.

Our dedication to beltmaking never wanes but we will admit to daydreaming about other products we might try to reinvent. We have circled and come back to Gloves many times, each time convinced that the Glove market shares so many similarities with where the belt market was back in 2003.

In a nutshell it is a product that in the UK at least is treated with little fanfare and regarded principally as a commodity, limited in its offer, poorly displayed and with all the glamour and excitement of...well nothing much really! As with our belt experience the only way to shake things up is to start fresh and not in half measures. We need to make people look at gloves in a new way - whether that be simply to start appreciating what a really good quality glove feels like, whether it be to see that using gloves as a colour vehicle can be great fun and really stylish.

Mens Gloves from Elliot Rhodes
So...this year we have taken the plunge and are proud to celebrate the launch of our debut glove collection. Our aim is to bring our expertise to this new area, introducing all important colour and little quirks of design detail that will turn a glove from boring necessity to desirable expression of individuality.

With a focus on luxurious quality and traditional craftsmanship from one of the oldest glovers in Spain our debut collection in collaboration with British glove designer Gizelle Renee features 5 styles for Women and 4 for Men, each in a stylish range of colours and each with its own idiosyncratic detail. Our gloves are all made from the finest quality lambskin, come lined in either silk, merino or rabbit and are traditionally made with just one single side seam for supreme fit and comfort. Details include Liberty print inserts, Cashmere piping, Herringbone cuffs, contrast stitching and more...

Like our belts there are gloves for different occasions and different looks...clearly for a lot of the year (here in the UK lets' say 8 months!) they are there to keep your hands warm, but even when it is not cold a lovely glove can really perk up an outfit, Not to mention that the nourishing oils from lambskin are great for your hands and if you are a commuter gloves serve a pretty damn good hygiene purpose too.

Most importantly we hope that once you have seen our collection you will start to see Gloves in a whole new light...

For this season our gloves are available exclusively in store - Prices from £110 - £175

As the sage of the natural world Sir David Attenborough gets ready to celebrate his 90th birthday we here at Elliot Rhodes are taking a step back in time to rediscover the world of the Megalodon - regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in vertebrate history and the presumed forebear of the great white shark (although there are those that argue that the prehistoric Mako was closer). Megalodon existed some 5-25 million years ago during the Miocene and Pliocene era, grew to some 18 metres long (double a great white) and had teeth that grew to some 7 inches long with a jaw that opened some 2m high. I have been fascinated by this monumental beast for some time and started collecting some fossilized teeth 6 or 7 years ago with the view to one day turning them into rather unique buckles. I love the idea of mixing the prehistoric with the modern and the opportunity to turn history into both fashion and art. For this buckle with its 2" sized tooth we have experimented with a new dimpled texture of sterling silver that closely mimics the surface of the tooth and given it substantial bulk to counterbalance the scale of the tooth itself. Truly I look at this and marvel at it both for its raw beauty and for the somewhat mythical story that it tells...owning and wearing it would be something truly special. It can currently be found on display in our Chelsea store.
